Melbourne Art Book Fair 2016

Writers, publishers and book lovers alike flooded the walls of the National Gallery of Victoria over the weekend. From Friday, 29 April to Sunday, 1 May, guests could attend seminars, public talks and view works from publishers, authors and artists. In its second year, theMelbourne Art Book Fair was bigger and better with twice as many events and publishers as previously.

It was a great opportunity for up-and-coming writers, artists and publishers to display their work and to showcase what they have produced for the creative world. It also gave the published writers a place to sell and to display works. From a range of fully published hardbacks to zines created of photographs and drawings, we were given a world of variety to view and to buy.

For writers, it was an inspirational place to be: you could discuss the publishing world with like-minded people and listen to talks from Australian and international publishers – it was a good way to increase knowledge and skills. The seminars and talks included a grammar workshop hosted by The Good Copy and a talk by the Sternberg Press from Berlin. With exciting free talks and seminars on during the whole weekend, there was never a moment to stand around, although you could have a drink and a laugh whilst viewing the publishers stalls.

With over 20 stalls of publishers, we saw new and exciting up-and-coming work while some stalls also showcased older works to remember the greats. There was so much variety: from black and white photography zines, anime, statement pieces and t-shirts and bags showcasing the new publishers, there was something for everyone.

The weekend was an amazing display of work and opportunity for both the stallholders and the attendees. The NGV never disappoints the creative mind and constantly gives us something new and dazzling in the form of art. The book fair in hope will return for another year in 2017.
