Melbourne prides itself on its multiculturalism and innovation. Our city is the perfect paradigm of cultural pride, with Federation Square, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Arts Centre Melbourne all standing in a harmonised, yet distinctive, square kilometre of one another. The city is celebrating its eco-awareness, thriving nature and thirst for knowledge by hosting the Transitions Film Festival out of Cinema Nova in Carlton.

From Thursday February 18th until Thursday March 3rd, the annual event returns to Nova for the fifth time to celebrate inspirational, game changing documentary film.

This year, the festival is dedicated to films that emphasise the themes of discovery, purpose, innovation, impact and the #ideasbloom that will shape our society and civilisation in the future.

Festival highlights include 16 Australian premieres, 23 feature films and 3 free screenings, with a number of guests including filmmakers, inspirational artists, activists and sustainability leaders. For those looking to deep dive into the future of our planet and the direction of society, screenings will include live artistic performances and post-film discussions with local and international thought leaders.

Content will address issues such as the history of climate change, the future of the food system around the globe, methods to pave a pathway out of poverty and the architecture of happiness. Films such as Catching The Sun and 10 Billion – What’s On Your Plate tackle the potential of creative and technological innovations to transform our ways of life, whilst economics and it’s driving forces are under the microscope in Requiem For The American Dream and The Price We Pay.

Festival director Daniel Simons has described this year’s Transitions Film Festival ‘is placing a strong emphasis on ideas and impact. As well as sharing powerful stories of change, we will be providing empowering educational resources via our website, and encouraging widespread sharing of good ideas via our digital community’. He has described the Festival as an opportunity to ‘show that good ideas, when coupled with passion and commitment, can change the world.’

It’s not just about new ideas, rather the right ideas and implementing practical, focused methods of producing and encouraging action.

To promote the theme of change within the community, patrons who ride their bike to the cinema and present their helmet at the Box Office will receive concession priced tickets.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
