Wasshoi Beer Sake And Sumibi

It’s no exaggeration to say that Japanese food and beer are a match made in heaven. One may even say, ‘Wasshoi!’, an exclamation of excitement or celebration in Japanese. A saying similar to the Spanish ‘Hola’. Luckily, that’s exactly why Japanese restaurant/bar, Wasshoi Beer Sake And Sumibi, has opened in Prahran Market providing a tantalising selection of grilled meats, sake and beer.

Renowned chef Ikuei Arakane is at the reigns of the 29 seat sumibiyaki bar. Well known for his spectacular Japanese cuisine at Koko restaurant in Crown and Taxi in Federation Square.

Whether going for a quick bite to eat with friends, or a few beers and snacks as the weather warms up, Wasshoi is conveniently situated in Prahran Market. The perfect place to feast on some teriyaki chicken, or pork belly after doing the shopping.

Sumibiyaki is relatively rare in Melbourne, in comparison to the abundance of Japanese food on offer. Differing to yakitori, Japanese grilled meat on skewers, sumibiyaki literally means charcoal grill in Japanese. While both offer grilled meat, it would be mortally insulting to confuse the two. Sumibiyaki bars are a current trend in Japan and frequent for office workers after a long day at work, where chugging down a cold glass of beer is rudimentary.

Wasshoi offers one of Japan’s most popular beers, Kirin, which is available chilled and on tap. Sake connoisseurs will be in for a treat with new selections available every month, including locally brewed options. The menu is to span the length of the bar offering a huge selection of food and drink.

So as the weather warms up, head down to Prahran market and say, Wasshoi!
