Biers, Wieners and fancy dressed sausage dogs! What more could you hope for in spring?

Get out your Dirndl and Lederhosen Melbourne, because ‘Hoptoberfest’, Hophaus Bier Bar Grill’s annual Oktoberfest celebration is back from Friday 18th – Sunday 27th September.

Melbourne’s most modern German bier hall has extended this year’s program to include the inaugural Teckelrennen 2015, ‘The Dachshund Race’ on Saturday 19th September.

‘The running of the Wieners’ (the animals not the delicious sausages) will show case a mass of furious footed sausage dogs racing for first place and striving for Best Dressed Dachshund!

Dachshund events all around the world are known for their extravagant and artistic costumes worn by the very placid sausage dogs, so it surely won’t disappoint.

The event, in partnership with My Dachshund Online, will raise much needed funds for Dachshund Rescue Australia and will take place at Southgate, Melbourne.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to highlight the skills and personalities if these small dogs. We can’t wait for the race, we’re expecting it to be quite a feat!” Naomi Jones, dachshund lover and owner of My Dachshund Online said.

Saturday September 19th is the official opening of Oktoberfest worldwide, with 6 million bier lovers from around the globe set to clash their steins simultaneously in Munich, Germany.

Hophaus is making a mark in Melbourne for the opening with the Dachshund race, the ceremonial Tapping of the Keg and the Annual Sausage Eating Competition with competitors taking on each other in an all-out battle of the wurst!

It’s not all booze, food, and crazy competitions however, with live German bands and music programmed for both weekends. Sundays are family days with face painting for the kids from 1-4pm.

Throughout the event, a special Bavarian Oktoberfest menu and a kids menu is offered along with best-dressed competitions as well as prizes and giveaways.

Up to 5,600 Melbourne Bier and food lovers are expected to join in on the 10 days of festivities.

Hoptoberfest is a complete German cultural extravaganza and will take over Melbourne once more with plenty of activities and entertainment for all ages.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
