Reunion Blues

Ah, the 1980s. There’s a decade you can’t confuse with any other, from its unique (i.e. daggy) fashion to its classic pop hits. It seems those who lived it can’t escape it and don’t want to, which is essentially what Reunion Blues is about. Or in the show’s own words, Reunion Blues is about “coming of age, Molly Ringwald and teenage love”.

Spanning over 25 years, the show tells of the story of Farsi Jones, played by the delightful Clare Pickering, from her being an ’80s boy crazy teenage girl nicknamed Psycho to becoming an insecure career woman with marital problems still longing for her high school crush Roman. It’s not only Farsi that changes, but also her bedroom that goes from having a wall filled with Molly Ringwald and David Bowie posters to a bare wall that shows the transition of both the years that have gone by and where she’s at in her life.

This show is jam packed with ’80s hits sung by Pickering, from ‘Living On A Prayer’ by Bon Jovi, ‘November Rain’ by Guns N’ Roses, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ by Tiffany, ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ by Pat Benatar, ‘I Want To Dance With Somebody’ by Whitney Houston, and ‘Sara’ by Starship (which is sung about Farsi’s bitchy boss of the same name). Towards the end, Pickering got an unsuspecting name from the audience to come up on stage with her so she could sing the Heart ballad ‘Alone’ to him. He seemed to enjoy the attention.

Playing at The Butterfly Club for a very limited time, if you’re out for a show with ’80s hits and some good laughs, Reunion Blues is the perfect union of the two.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
