Prahran Market Celebrates 150 Years
Posted by Matt Wilson

Melbourne may be one of the younger cities in the world compared to the likes of Athens or Rome, but that doesn’t mean Melbourne doesn’t have plenty of history attached to it. One such old Melbourne gem is the Prahran Market that will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this weekend and it promises to be quite the celebration.
Like any other birthday, there will be speeches to celebrate the market’s longstanding existence against the bigger supermarkets that have been introduced over the years, proving not everything gets closed down by big business. It’s lasted quite a few lifetimes so far, and hopefully it will last many more to come. And like a 21st birthday party (plus 129 years), there will be old photos around of the market over the years to show how much has changed.
Its an event for both those old enough to remember what the market looked like in the 1950s to little ones going there for the very first time. There will be plenty of free activities for everyone, including horse drawn carriage rides around the markets, a vintage pop-up photo booth full of historical props to muck around with, and much, much more! So if you love markets and love a bit of history, why not check out some of your own town’s oldest, and still great, history?
