In the dwindling days of Melbourne’s winter, a gleaming new structure has risen in the Docklands. With fairy-spires 10 storeys high, the White Big Top is the world’s largest touring tent and home to a unique show that blends dance, music, acrobatics and the love between human and horse.

Cavalia: a magical encounter between human and horse features 48 incredible horses and 36 talented acrobats, dancers, musicians and aerialists from around the world. Aided by a 60 metre digital projection screen and cutting-edge multimedia effects, each scene tells a different story and will have you marvelling at the physical beauty that can be created through equine and human bodies.

The performance ranges from high energy and athletic to ethereal and moving. The horses themselves are stunning to watch as they move across the 50 metre stage, which allows them to move up to a full gallop.

The tone of the show is playful, and the horses throughout are treated with respect, trust and patience. While some parts can become a little gimmicky, the authentic bond between rider and horse is evident and tricks are rewarded with hugs and praise. Even when things go a little wrong. One cheeky horse had the audience in stitches after refusing to stop circling the stage at a spirited canter.
