Masak Masak opened four weeks ago with the aim of bring the tastes Malay market food to Melbourne. Dedicated to authenticity, the team at Masak Masak installed a charcoal barbeque in the dining area to ensure they achieve that perfect smoky, satay flavour.

While the cuisine celebrates the traditional features of street food, the fitout is more along the contemporary lines. A giant graffiti orangutan lounges on one wall, while a range of bright coloured metal chairs and stools are scattered around the white and bright dinning area.

Serving both lunch and dinner Masak Masak is ideal for any type of meal. Their $10 lunch menu (not available Sunday) is the perfect quick fix, with dishes like veggie laksa or kon loo mee, with prawn wonton and dried egg noodle. The fried rice with chicken wings, onion and sambal is definitely worth a taste for the bird’s crunchy, spicy coating.

The dinner menu offers a broader range of options. From larger platters like pork belly and green papya salad or grilled stingray and pineapple salad (both $19), to ‘sharing is caring’ dishes, like prawn wontons ($9). To complete the Malay dining experience you can even drink fresh coconut water straight from the nut itself. But if the hard stuff is more your thing a liquor license is in the works.
