New Malaysian/Indonesian hawker kitchen Koko Yee presents a minimalist design and a series of evocative menu choices in the central nervous system of the CBD.

Proprietors Koko and Mr. Lee have combined their favorite Indonesian and Malaysian dishes whilst also creating their own signature duck dishes…these being Koko’s Balinese style fried bebek – (bebek translates to duck in Indonesian) and also Mr. Yee’s malaysian soy infused duck.

Appearing in the ashes of a hobby/toy model store on the main drag of Lonsdale Street, the idea behind the menu is a collection of culinary creations that are quick, easy and satisfying. Meals are ordered using a playful card system.

Birds are all the rage here, with duck and chicken a focal point for proteins offered. A collection of appetisers, including battered onion rings with KKK sauce are also available. My intrepid dining traveler and I began the meal with a round of Summerdays ($4.00) a refreshing concoction of iced peach tea, lemonade and lime juice.

We began with a salty bean sambal and garlic kang long with rice ($9.50). A small amount of diced tempeh and chili was riddled through the beans gave the dish a punch and crunch.

The next round was a serve of ayam pengyet (Smashed Chicken) with chunky sambal terasi and rice ($10). The chicken skin was reassuringly crisp while and the sambal didn’t take short cuts on spice.

Koko Yee might still be in its infancy but given the location, friendly staff and price point it’s very likely to be very crowded very soon.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
