Susan Trigg launches Art Scarves

There’s a lot more wrapped in a scarf than first meets the eye.

Or at least, Susan Trigg thinks so. With a background in photography, digital art and textiles, it made sense for Trigg to pool all her passions together for one purpose. That purpose, it turned out, was scarves.

“I think they’re such a lovely garment, and silk scarves are so beautiful to wear against your skin. They’re just a gorgeous thing to wrap around your neck, around your waist, drape it off a handbag, so many things you can do with scarves.”

The North Fitzroy-based photographer has just launched a series of ‘art scarves’, created by printing her digital art designs on a series of limited-run silk scarves.

At a distance her designs seem abstract, but to look closely reveals much more. The prints are actually made through a process of layering her photographs that she has taken both in Melbourne and during her world travels.

“I try and mimic the way you might layer a painting…you build up layers and you let it dry, and you go back and do another layer and bits of the previous one can show through. I’m doing that in a digital sense.”

The final effect is a compounding of richness and textures, matching grunge with elegance, then brought to life with the physical movement of a fashion garment.

With a strong commitment to sustainability, Trigg Designs ensures all printing and finishing is done in Australia on 100% biodegradable silk.

“I’d like to start people questioning the whole notion of ‘fast fashion’. We are consuming more fashion that’s really good for us and good for the planet. I’d like to see us stepping back to what our grandparents did of having pieces that last; buying good quality, if possible supporting our local industry, and buying pieces that you can keep loving for years, and re-purpose them.”

Susan Trigg’s scarves are available at susantrigg.com while stocks last.
