Perched next to The Magic Lantern up the city end of Brunswick Street, Slowpoke Espresso opened its doors earlier this week.
Occupying the space that was formerly Pollen Industries, this fresh-as-daisies cafe, designed by Sasufi, has a big, bright front room, a cozy area out back and a nifty little courtyard. Bonus points for playing The Smiths on opening day.
Owner Curtis Riddington, who studied enviro science before swapping bark for baking, is assisted behind the counter by barista Nick Milwright, who has worked at The Breakfast Club and Tin Pot. Slowpoke’s chalkboard menu is based around seasonal produce, and sourcing whatever they can’t make from local suppliers. This means Supreme coffee and baked goodies from Loafer Bread Organic Bakery , which arrive via bike daily.
It’s a frosty morning when I visit and the 3 Grain Porridge with Baked Rhubarb and Blueberries ($9) seems right. Although I could have been swayed by the Grilled Cheese, Creamed Corn and Smoked Paprika on Toast ($8) or the Avocado and Fetta Mash on Toast with Herbs and Chilli ($10).
A steaming bowl of organic oats topped with rhubarb, berries and served with a side of honey soon arrives, the size of a small planet. Convenient, as my appetite is galactic. Warming, gooey, sweet and sharp, this is the kind of breakfast that fills you up while producing an overpowering desire to nap. Fortunately my flat white is sufficiently zippy to ward off Little Bear-itus, and pretty soon I’m on my way back into the wintery morning, warm and fuzzy.
I like Slowpoke Espresso. I don’t know what the name means, but they’re really nice, they make good food, strong coffee and they play The Smiths. And that’s about all I need.
