Ying Thai 2 is serving up some of the most authentic Thai food in Melbourne. Coming from a Sydney ex-pat, this is a huge statement. We arrived on a Tuesday night to find the bustling, cheerful restaurant absolutely jam-packed. This meant it took awhile for our orders to be taken, but the wait sharpened our appetites as endless processions of heaped, heavenly-smelling dishes were brought forth from the kitchen.
We ordered Chinese-style fried spinach pancake, vegetable stir fry with chilli and basil, vegetarian spring rolls and coconut rice. There is no dedicated vegetarian section of the menu and halfway through the meal I twigged what that flavour was – fish sauce. Vegans make sure you specify when ordering.
The coconut rice, melt in your mouth soft and flavoured with lemongrass, came in a gargantuan portion, easily enough for two. The spring rolls didn’t set my world on fire but the fried pancake with dark sweet soy was special. Even with the fish sauce these dishes were incredible, and incredibly spicy! We ordered our dishes medium and were still on the verge of tears (in a good way).
Enjoying such bountiful, delicious food in a packed restaurant full of hungry bubbly students was an added extra. Ying Thai 2 is that salty puckered smile I’ve been longing for. And there’s so much promise to the rest of the menu I can’t wait to return.
